Every once in a while I want to do a TBT about a favorite Costume or Memory.
I was just thinking this week about one of my first weeks on Austin and Ally. I started Designing the show in it’s second season so the cast and crew were already a great family and here I come. Everyone was so nice and supportive. One of my first scripts was “Fresh Starts and Farewells”, I have Ross Lynch “Austin” singing “Better Than This” in a huge stage performance with backup dancers in rain with umbrellas. Yes, I said Rain! I think I asked in the meeting was it going to be digital rain or real water, they look and me and said REAL WATER.
This was so exciting to me and I wanted it to look Epic. I was thinking Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain” in his suit. I did not want just any suit and I knew Ross looked great in blue so I had blue leather blazers custom made for him by a good friend, johnathanalogan.com. Why Leather? I don’t know, it just looked SO GOOD! At the first fitting the Blazer looked and fit Beautifully but Ross looked and me and couldn’t move his arms pass his shoulders. I went back and added stretch fabric under the arms and in the sides and that did it.
The dance number turned out to be Incredible. Ross and the dancers were amazing with the umbrellas and the rain. If I remember correctly Ross was very sick when we shot this with a cold and a fever. That is how good and professional he is.
Check out the video, it’s one of my favorites. Let me know one of your favorite Austin songs or dance numbers from Austin and Ally.
